DARJEELING
“Queen of Hills” –
is a beautiful place offering
amazing view of Mt.Kanchenjunga and lush green
tea gardens. Darjeeling is also famous for its
cultural diversity, boarding schools and
opportunities for adventure sports. Located in
the lower Shivalik Hills in the Himalayas at a
height of 2,134m above sea level, Darjeeling was
developed as a hill station by the British. The
Mall in Darjeeling is the centre of attraction
for tourists. The Himalayan Mountaineering
Institute was established here in 1954, by the
government of India. Tenzing Norgay and Edmund
Hillary after climbing the Mount Everest in
1953, became HMI’s first directors of field
tranning.
GANGTOK
Gangtok, the capital of Sikkim, is situated
along the river Ranipul. The entire Kanchenjunga
range is worshiped as a local deity. Located at
a height of 1,547m above sea level, Gangtok has
many famous monasteries and stupas like the
Enchey Monastery and the Do Drul Chorten. Rumtek
Monastery is located about 24 km from Gangtok.
The Tsongpo Lake about 20 km away offers
breath-taking views of the mountains.
KALIMPONG
Kalimpong, located at the altitude of 1247m from
sea level, is a quaint little hill station in
the north east. Kalimpong is known for its
residential schools like the Dr.Graham’s Homes,
St.Joseph’s C onvent and St. Augustine’s School.
Places to see here include, Zang Dhok Palri
Phodang, Teesta Bazaar and Kaffer.
KURSEONG
Kurseong is a scenic hill station located about
30km from Darjeeling. At a height of 1458m, the
town is famous for its tea gardens, exotic
vegetation, especially White Orchids which adorn
its hill slopes. The weather remains pleasant
all through the year. Kurseong is connected to
Darjeeling by road as well as the Darjeeling
Himalayan Railway.
